Dancing Dogs

I’m tough on specialists, but I think they should be judged by different metrics of quality. There will be only a few visits that really count when it comes to your cardiac or gastrointestinal surgeon and other specialists. You rise or fall on the depth of their experience and skill. It may sound cynical, but when a surgeon or specialist behaves at a level of mere decency, you should value it. They are like dancing dogs. You don’t expect it to be done well; you’re just impressed that they bother to do it at all.

As a rule, I’d steer clear of sites that offer fewer than five consumer reviews for a provider. They won’t be representative enough to drive decisions. I’d also be suspicious of sites at the other end of the spectrum that offer dozens of five-star reviews for a single provider with the important narrative comments missing. These have a higher likelihood of resulting from consumer enticements or pressure. Value written comments over numerical scores. Many health systems (such as Stanford, Cleveland Clinic, and University of Utah) have begun posting their ratings and comments from their own internally created satisfaction surveys. I’d pass. Those who might benefit from reviews should not generate them. When rating doctors, use metrics that reflect results not window dressing. Owing to privacy concerns, doctors are not allowed[70] to respond online to your critiques, but they can sue[71] you.
